The Allagash Wilderness Waterway
The Allagash Wilderness Waterway:
Comprised of lakes, ponds and rivers that wander through the heart of northern Maine, the Allagash Wilderness Waterway is a 92 miles route that was established in 1966 by the Maine legislature. The area that surrounds the waterway is the Maine North Woods which is both an area and organization. Access to this water way does require two entrance fees when registering at the Maine North Woods Gate, Inc.
Approximately 3000 people visit the Allagash each year between May and October. Traveling from Telos Lake to West Twin Brook will showcase the entire waterway and can take upwards of ten days depending on group size, ambition and trip goals. It can also be paddled in as little as seven days, however shorter trips can be arranged depending on time and ability. The waterway provides and maintains campsite along the entire route typically supplying a privy, fire-place, and picnic tables. Campsites are managed on a first come first serve basis. Visiting the park website or obtaining information from the Bureau of Parks and Land will be crucial in planning appropriately as well as additional information on group size, registration, shuttling, camping requirements, access and maps. The variety of water habitats highlights many Maine species . This includes Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, Moose, Otters, and Beavers.
