THE NEW ENGLAND OUTDOOR CENTER STORY

The Penobscot Indians named Maine’s highest peak Katahdin, meaning “The Greatest Mountain.” And today, in the shadow of majestic Katahdin, New England Outdoor Center offers outdoor adventure experiences to rival the area’s geographic wonders. This ultimate destination rests at the northernmost point of the famed Appalachian Trail and the southern origin of the International Appalachian Trail, providing a convenient home base for everything from whitewater rafting and wildlife expeditions to award-winning dining.

Founders Matt and Wendy Polstein not only serve as owner/managers, but have worn every hat at New England Outdoor Center over the years since they founded the resort in 1982. As Katahdin Region residents and business owners, their dedication to local natural resources, heritage, and sustainability, in every sense of the word, is reflected in all of their offerings. Spanning three locations in western and northern Maine including the pivotal hub boasting views of Mount Katahdin, New England Outdoor Center tailors experiences to suit adventure seekers, vacationing families, and wildlife worshippers, as well as wedding parties, businesses and organizations seeking the ideal spot for a reception, retreat or meetings.
