Maine's world class West Branch of the Penobscot River offers guests looking for less than a full day of whitewater rafting two great choices. Join our regularly scheduled trip for either the morning or afternoon portion of the run.
The Morning Run: If you are looking for an introduction to whitewater, join our trip for the morning run of the lower class III-IV stretch of the river. This trip starts at Nesowdnehunk Falls and for those looking for a mellow start to the day, you have the choice of getting in below the class IV water falls. After the falls, weather and water levels permitting, we stop at Nesowdnehunk Stream for a chance to swim in a natural waterslide. Your time at the slide is ideal for some peaceful floating beneath Mount Katahdin on the Abol Dead Water. Eagles, moose, and osprey are commonly seen on this river section. The rapids of Abol and Pocwockamus Falls wrap up the morning and a hearty riverside lunch is served to end this half day trip.
Our morning run starts with a 7:00 a.m. meeting time and ends after lunch.
The Afternoon Run: For those looking for a lot of adventure in a small amount of time, join our trip at lunch and enjoy the afternoon run of Ripogenus Gorge, Maine's toughest Class V white water run. The famous rapids of the Gorge once described in the book The Penobscot Man, by Fanny Hardy Eckstrom, as a "boiling, seething, smoking flood of water," contains the world class Exterminator, Staircase and Cribworks rapids. Our afternoon ends with a little surfing in the big hole at the bottom of Big "A" rapids, which is a favorite activity with many of our guests.
Our afternoon guests need to check in at our base at 9:30 a.m. and are usually done by 5:30 p.m.
